"Real" news

...as compared with the reports on our trip to Ireland and England. This is what has happened here in Madeira, so you can decide whether it's more real or more news than the recent postings.

Our new church chairs arrived, replacing the cheap folding chairs we bought in Nov. 2004, when we inaugurated our new building and we were budgeting our money as we finished the project. They served well, but because they were cheap ("you get what you pay for"), as time went on, they wore out and tended to fold when they weren't supposed to...like, while someone was sitting on one. The obviously dangerous ones have now been thrown out, and the rest of the others stored for future use.

The last row was moved to block the main entrance, as we would be opening the double doors for the baptismal service in the afternoon.

The new chairs in use. The summer drop in attendance is already becoming noticeable, as teachers return to the mainland and soccer players go back to Brazil for the summer break.

Josevã and his wife, Danielle, were baptized yesterday. They asked for baptism at Easter, but because of his schedule as a soccer player (footballer, to the non-US English-speaking world) and our trip, this Sunday was chosen for the service.

They each gave a profession of faith: Josevã accepted the Lord about 6 months ago; Danielle was baptized when she was a young teenager in Brazil (they are both Brazilians), but 6 years ago, she actually gave her life to the Lord and then never had peace about her earlier baptism. She wanted to be baptized with the full assurance of knowing what she was doing and as a sign of her true faith in Jesus. That would explain the smile on her face, as we posed for the many pictures that were being taken.
